Kids in Ghana need your help

Hi everyone.

I’ve been writing for BSH for more than three years now, and in that time I’ve asked for very little in return. Today, I make my first real request, and it’s not really for me. I’m raising money for charity, and I’d like your help.

The charity is about as good a cause as I can imagine: they’re working to help fight child slavery in Ghana, and to support and rehabilitate the children who are released from the trade. It’s incredibly heart-wrenching stuff — slave-owning fishermen seek out really young children, whose small fingers are particularly well-suited to making fine knots in fishing nets. The kids get very little care or food and no education; they are eventually released with nothing, and City of Refuge gives them a home and an education.

It doesn’t take much money to make a difference. It costs about $500 to get a child freed from slavery. It costs about $150 to take care of an abandoned child for a month. Our collective effort can make a real difference in people’s lives.

I have a personal connection to this effort. My sister spent a semester in Ghana working with this group as part of her degree in social work. She is graduating in May and will be going to graduate school and continuing this work. Organizing this fundraiser is my graduation gift to her.

I would be extremely grateful for anything you can do. Donations of any size would of course be appreciated, but if you can’t make that work, even just helping spread the word would be helpful.

The page for donating is right here. Thank you very much for your help.
